Director’s Profile

David Verbeek is a Dutch scriptwriter and director. He graduated from both the New York and Amsterdam Film Academy, focusing on film directing, photography and philosophy. Verbeek is considered one of the great cinematic talents of the Netherlands. His work is daring, personal, of a high artistic quality, and often picks up on themes that are relevant in contemporary society. This is reflected in the success his films have experienced at international film
festivals. His feature debut, “Shanghai Trance”, was elected for the Tiger Awards at the Rotterdam International Film Festival. Club Zeus won Return of the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, while “R U There” was selected for Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival. Verbeek’s new feature, “Dead & Beautiful”, granted support from the Torino Film Lab.

Synopsis

After a weird night, five bored, super-rich friends find out they are vampires. Panic! Is this really what they have become? Can they still trust one another? Each and every one goes to extreme lengths to find out. This take on the vampire genre plays generously with societal tension and expectations at a meta level. The opulent but eerie locations and impressive cityscapes are mesmerising, yet function as a backdrop for themes such as violence, isolation and innocence.
