- Director’s Profile
- Wregas Bhanuteja was born in Jakarta in October 1992. He graduated in film directing from Jakarta Institute of Arts in 2014. His short film, Lembusura (2014), competed at Berlin International Film Festival 2015. In 2016 he won Best Short Film at Cannes Critics’ Week with his short film In the Year of Monkey (2016). His next short film, No One is Crazy in This Town (2019), competed at Sundance Film Festival 2020. His first feature film, Photocopier (2021), had its world premiere at Busan International Film Festival 2021 and won 12 Citra Awards at Festival Film Indonesia 2021. His second feature film, Andragogy (2023), had its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival 2023, had its theatrical release in November 2023 in Indonesia, and is now available on Netflix.

Trance parties using spirits are commonly held in Latas Village, led by spirit channelers who possess the participants (known as addicts) with the spirits they gather while meditating in the Spring.
A group of developers, the Wanaria Group, are determined to acquire the village, including the Spring. To save Latas, Guru Asri (45), a respected shaman, holds a contest to select a new spirit channeler to help raise the funds needed to buy the Spring directly.
Bayu (20), a musician for the trance parties, takes part in the selection. He trains by mimicking the animal spirits he hopes to attract. Bayu shines by using the bedbug spirit. However, Guru Asri has several other potential candidates. Bayu trains harder, to the point he neglects everyone, including his father, and manages to obtain the highest-level leech spirit, but still loses the final vote.
At the grand trance party, Bayu, beginning to accept his defeat, acts as an assistant. During the party, one suspicious-looking participant bites the ear of a Wanaria Group security guard. A fight occurs. Bayu then leads the trance crew to possess all the addicts using the turtle spirit, which will make the addicts′ skin immune to blows. Together they manage to overpower the security forces.
Despite the incident, Wanaria continues its development. Meanwhile, Bayu makes peace with his father and realizes his true calling.
