Director’s Profile
After director July Jung graduated from the Film, Television and Multimedia department of Sungkyunkwan University, she went on to study a graduate course at the school of Film, TV & Multimedia at Korea National University of Arts. Whilst studying there, she filmed A Man under the Influenza (2007) which won a Sonje Award at the 2007 Busan International Film Festival. Her second short film, 11 (2008) was nominated for the Asia Short Film & Video Competition at the International Women’s Film Festival in Seoul and after garnering this recognition from within the film industry, she further developed her directing capabilities through A Dog Came into my Flash (2010). The nomination of her first feature film, A Girl at My Door (2014), for the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival confirms her talent, and currently July Jung is preparing her next project, Dora, which we are confident will be another amazing film.
Synopsis
During a hot summer, Dora’s family get away from the stresses of their lives in Seoul to their summer house in Namhae, on the south coast of Korea. They are all worn out and wish to bounce back after a relaxing vacation. The mother, Do-yeon, is always working and the father, Sang-hun, suffers from a chronic illness caused by overwork. Dora, who has anxiety issues, is struggling to adapt to her school life. They spend time with the family of Sang-hun’s longtime friend, Yeon-su; a local artist who relocated to the area with his wife, Jea-hee and their twin children. One day, Do-yeon leaves and goes back to Seoul after a confrontation with Dora about her lack of faith in her husband, Sang-hun, who she believes is having an affair with Jea-hee. However, her absence does not stop the others from having a relaxing time together. Rather it seems to free them. Meanwhile, Dora meets Tae-ho, who is in town for the summer working part-time, and becomes interested in him, despite being somewhat apprehensive. Dora’s oversensitivity and anxiety seem to be stabilizing, and she is proud of herself for taking on the role of her mother in looking after her father. She also believes that she is loved by the twins and Yeon-su. Dora feels a particularly special bond with Jea-hee, after learning that she overcame substantial trauma in the past. Dora’s respect for and faith in Jea-hee only grows as she spends more time with her. But, one day Dora finds Jea-hee and Sang-hun in bed together.
